How to Use a Yoga Swing

If you are trying out a swing you don’t have to join an aerial yoga class, you could engage in your own practice at home. Most people do aerial yoga in a large room or door frame, somewhere where you can hang the swing with plenty of space to move forwards and backwards. You could even assemble the swing outdoors hanging from a tree or in a garage, basically anywhere where the swing will be 100% secure with excellent support from a cross beam or suspension racks is best.

Potential Routines with a Yoga Swing

Inversions: The top benefit of using a yoga swing has got to be the opportunity to do inversions. We are a real culture of sitters, most of us constantly sitting still in front of a computer at a desk for hours every day. That means our spines are always being compressed which equals back pain over time as well as herniated discs, sciatica and pinched nerves.

Try a handstand, headstand or forearm stand using the straps to support your lower half as you turn upside down.

Extend your arms and legs using the ropes and handles of the swing and hand upside down like an upside down Goddess or Horse pose.

Give your spine a break and experiment with other inversion poses, allowing the spine to lengthen and gain space, counteracting all those hours of sitting and squishing your vertebra together.


You can use the swing to help you in heart openers, stretching out the front side of the body and assisting you into backbends that would normally be too much, too intense or all together impossible to reach. The nicest thing about swing assisted backbends is that the aerial nature of the movement means that you don’t force your way into a painful pose (you should never do that anyway). The yoga swing allows the posture to be passive. Once you move into the pose, you can relax, open and create space in your body and mind.

You can move into a camel pose, allowing the straps to keep you in place.

Scorpion Pose can also be reached with the swing more easily, just use the ropes and handles to deepen your backbend while positions your pelvis across the wide straps.

Come into a Plank Pose by suspending your body between two straps.

Practice pull ups with the ropes and handles.

Practice split pose or lizard pose with the swing as an extra support to deepen the stretch.

You can play around with different poses in the swing, using it as a supportive tool to help you reach more challenging postures, deepen your stretches and test your strength. That complete freedom from gravity will really empower your practice.

If you are menstruating, it’s generally advised to avoid inversions both on the mat or swing.

Take care to consider your weight and the support of the suspension system being used to make sure you do not exceed capacity. This is not usually an issue, the average swing can hold up to 250-300 pounds. Just be sensible and do not use the swing for two people at a time!
